The Twickenham neighborhood in Huntsville, Alabama, is very close to downtown Huntsville. The columns above are not in that neighborhood, per se, but are close enough that we passed them on the same walk. Huntsville isn’t a particularly large city (population 225,000) but, even so, that there can be so many spectacular homes in its heart is remarkable.

As we walked up and down the streets of Twickenham, there were quite a few homes with the two-story columns flanking the entryway, and the do look impressive. Later in our walk, a little sunlight peaked out and gave better lighting:

With those trees in the upper corners, I think the composition above would make a great spooky image in different lighting. Maybe something like this:

This next image benefitted from the best light of the day, with warm sunlight and a dark cloud behind:

I suppose that, compared to the facades above, this next one is relatively modest:

I have to apologize for including this next image, however; it’s not an image that you can unsee:

This building is not really in the Twickenham neighborhood proper, either, but is very nearby. This building is a children’s museum. I would say that explains the garish colors, but it really doesn’t: this is truly one of the most hideous things I can remember seeing. I really should have included a warning that “Viewer discretion is advised” with this one.
Next week we will leave the tidy world of Twickenham and head back out to a swamp.

Beautiful design those old buildings!
Yes, they are really special. No tract homes in this area!
